Artist's statement

This portrait was taken near Alexis Wright's home on the outskirts of Melbourne in an area affected by the bushfires of Black Saturday. We had decided to use the charred trees and regrowth as symbols relating to some of the topics in her writing. The land belonged to a family that operated a wildlife refuge, and who lost everything including countless animals they were nursing. In the end the day was about something other than photography and we walked away with new friends.
