Artist's statement

In the Upper Florentine Valley, Tasmania, the front line of opposition to the legally sanctioned clear-felling of previously untouched old-growth native forests consists of diverse bands of young people who make a physical stand in front of the corporate bulldozers and heavy machinery, or endanger themselves by climbing high into the tallest trees to prevent them being felled. In Forestry Tasmania's logging coupe FO 44A such a group is maintaining a vigil in their effort to prevent the area from being logged. Photographed deep within this area of pristine, ancient rainforest along with six of her fellow protesters in the background, Elia epitomized all the elements of rebellion, innocence, youth and determination that typifies these activists.
