Catherine Hamlin AC was photographed at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia, which she and her husband Reginald founded in 1974. It remains the only medical center in the world dedicated exclusively to fistula repair and provides free fistula repair surgery to approximately 1,200 women every year. Catherine, now in her 80s, has won a list of humanitarian awards and has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. She continues to perform the delicate fistula repair surgery she pioneered more than 40 years ago and oversees the working of the hospital. This photograph was taken at the entrance of the operating theater that is named after her late husband.
